The exhibition offers insights into the central strategies of political image building. Political posters from the past 100 years illuminate entire “life cycles” of political figures, from a campaign through representation to biting satire that dismantles the public image. Case studies from various epochs and systems illustrate the transformation of the political image: from Lenin and Che Guevara to Arnold Schwarzenegger and Yulia Tymoshenko – supplemented by unique photographic series and art projects from the four corners of the world as well as references to Austrian politics.

Elliott Erwitt. Retrospective
In his photographs, Elliott Erwitt, who delighted in focussing his gift of observation on animals as well as humans – and, especially, on all-too-human situations – combines irony with insight, lightness with profundity. The present retrospective reveals a highly active and versatile photographer who has also been called the “Woody Allen of photography”, an “invisible insider”, a social-realist documentarian and, in particular, the creator of humorous images of everyday life that can often make life just a little bit easier.

The Surrealists were the first to recognise the artistic potential of photo booths. Many other artists were to follow, for example Cindy Sherman, Arnulf Rainer, Andy Warhol or Thomas Ruff. With more than 300 works by about 60 international artists, this exhibition introduces us to the world of the “aesthetics behind the curtain”, which range from the photo booth’s function of producing “official” passport photos through artistic ways of playing with identities to the telling of short stories or the creation of individual worlds.
