Air encloses the earth like a membrane, it is vital and omnipresent. As a connecting element between places, also as a carrier of smells and sounds. Man's relationship to the invisible elements of wind, air and breath is complex. The artistic works in this exhibition address not only the energy of life but also the danger of storms, air pollution and climate change. Scientists have long assumed that severe hurricanes are favoured by climate change, as the warming of the earth also results in warmer sea water. Although we are permanently surrounded by air, the invisible mixture of gases remains hidden from human perception. Our first breath occurs at birth, our last at death. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, we fear the breath of others and try to protect ourselves from infection with masks. In the course of a lifetime, we breathe in and out 300 million litres of air.
22 international and Austrian artists make the invisible elements of breath, air and wind visible in different ways: Hoda Afshar, Bigert & Bergström, Julius von Bismarck, Olafur Eliasson, Karin Fisslthaler, Ana Grilc, Isabelle Ha Eav, Jana Hartmann, Ayumi Ishii, Sophie Jung, Sjoerd Knibbeler, Ulrike Königshofer, Eduardo Leal, Emily Parsons-Lord, Peter Piller, Werner Reiterer, Roman Signer, Lydia Simon, Ulay/Marina Abramović, Nadim Vardag, Niina Vatanen, Susan Walsh
The exhibition When the Wind Blows is a cooperation with the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
Curators: Verena Kaspar-Eisert (KUNST HAUS WIEN) and Liddy Scheffknecht (University of Applied Arts Vienna)
