Artist Talk

Eline Benjaminsen and Elias Kimaiyo talk about their project Footprints in the Valley

One tree to offset one ton of carbon? This vague claim prompted Eline Benjaminsen to have her own tree planted and to follow its trade route. Her investigation took her to the Embobut Forest in Kenya, where she encountered a conflict of global and local interests: internationally financed reforestation projects have claimed the area a nature reserve, leading to the violent displacement of the indigenous Sengwer population. Benjaminsen conducted this project in collaboration with human rights activist Elias Kimaiyo, who, as part of the Sengwer community, is himself a victim of such displacement.

Perspectives on forest ecosystems
In association with Klima Biennale Wien, KunstHausWien presents a comprehensive group exhibition on one of the world’s most vital ecosystems: the forest. Sixteen contemporary artistic positions reflect on the forest as a habitat, its ecological processes, as well as the threats it faces.
