As part of the exhibition Seeds. Reclaiming Roots, Sowing Futures, an excursion will take place to the seed collection of the Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna.
The Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna houses a living collection of around 13,000 plant species. Many of these species are propagated via seeds. In addition, wild species are collected as seeds in their natural habitats and then germinated in the Botanical Garden. Some seeds are also stored and preserved, for example in the case of highly endangered species whose survival in their natural habitat is not guaranteed.
During the excursion, plant species are presented for which collecting and growing seeds is particularly important. In addition, participants explore the diversity of seed shapes and their various adaptations for dispersal by wind, animals, gravity, and other means, thus expanding their background knowledge on the exhibition’s theme.
